Next I painted some Vallejo Calvalry Red for the primer.
This was followed by a liberal coating straight from the can some Citadel clear lacquer to seal it. Sealed it against the hairspray coat which followed. Next I used some Tamiya Field green for the Russian green. Next I used some water and a brush to open up some wounds. This was followed with a spray out of the can of Citadel lacquer, and then a coat of hairspray right from the can of hair spray. Next up the Tamiya white and then removing areas for chips and wear with water and a brush.

It really was not hat I was looking to create. I decided to spray some of the green into areas that had hair spray re applied and then white but in the end it just looked terrible and the turret was a different colour- a kind of red so I pulled the pin and oven cleaned the bitch. This one is not going down without a struggle.....

So as I do more and more of these I am getting dialed in on what I need to do. I don't look at the screw ups as failures, more just part of the usual process I go through when mastering some task or technique. I feel confident that my next attempt will be more successful. One thing I think I have come to feel about this is that I will skip the red primer layer. It just ends up showing up way more than I'd like. Perhaps in the future I will work with this more but as can be seen here and with the Sdkfz.10 blog- the results are just not where I wish them to be. I will add chips with a sponge or brush to portray any exposed primer, after the green goes on. I also am going to try and decant the hairspray and lacquer and spray them on with the airbrush, as I think I did not have much control on the amount when sprayed straight from the can. I think the major difference on this next attempt will be not to do such a thick and overall white paint coat. Also I am using some Tamiya grey primer from the can to prep it out this time, not flat black, although I may do some pre-shading here and there.
So, here you can see the stripped down model ready, for a second try. I almost like the way it looks now!
It was a bit of a pain, the paint did not just sluff off in some areas, and a few rivets that were added before, which had disappeared after the oven cleaner, needed to be replaced. The oven cleaner also destroyed some of the filling work I had done before but I was able to deal with these issues and a few others in a timely manner and all systems are ! for another attempt. There is a little sanding here and there to be done and perhaps a small fill or two yet but I am excited again after having the less than perfect results before.

I think a realistic white wash is one of the most difficult finishes to achieve. I think most people who try to do weather beaten ones go overboard and have huge chips and such in it. White wash didn't really chip off all that much but was rather worn down/off which is a very different look. I'm curious to see how your newest attempt turns out.

The more I sit here and look at the build you have done here the more I like it. I am really looking forward to seeing this one painted up. I would suggest you go light on the beaten up paint job though as the vehicle itself is in great shape. Being that most of these vehicles were in and out of action in the early part of the war, a Russian green with a heavy coat of fine dust might be a good choice (summer time). Maybe heavily streaked due to a recent down pour. Just some suggestions.

BTW Roy, really appreciate your support on the site- seems you've posted a lot of replies of late. It's funny I get at least one or two members joining each week but not many people really post. I have to say there seems to be a general lack of posting on model websites these days compared to years ago, but still would be nice to here from other members.
