"The size of disasters like Sandy and the damage they do to local and state infrastructure means that the federal government often has to step in to get the affected areas back on their feet"

Not to get too political but often the Federal Govt. "stepping in" to help often does more harm than good. State and local Govt. often do a better job of handeling emergencies such as this. Take the recent visit to New Jersey by the POTUS. Why (we all know why but still)? Does he not trust his people on the ground to make the proper assesments? Couldn't he have just flown over the area in Marine One? Nope he had to go and along with it disrupt any relief efforts going on in the area becuase of security reasons. That area will be back up on its feet in no time and it won't be becuase of the Fed. Govt.

I am amazed at the amount of damage and it really shows how fragile the life style we all take for granted is. Being on the west coast of Canada, it really won't effect me except to probably raise insurance rates.

Well if he had come down he would have been criticized as well for the very same reasons I mentioned earlier (one of the reasons I hate politics).
